Sean Hughes
Director – Open-Science Ecosystem, ServiceNow
“Transparency is the new compute,” Sean Hughes likes to say, and he treats the motto as a blueprint. For him, open innovation is more than lifting the hood; it means building an ecosystem where people can co-create, inspect, and share open data, tools, and models, unleashing the state-of-the-art AI through collaborative scientific research that fuels new industries, delivers customer value, and benefits society at large.
Sean’s AI journey began in 2001 at De La Rue, where he architected an expert system for cash systems field service management. At HP/HPE, he later launched a new platform with developer go-to-market programs for AI-as-a-Service, experience that underpins the ecosystem leadership he brought to Intel, and now ServiceNow.
As a founding board member of the AI Alliance’s Technology & Advocacy Association, Sean shapes global policy and standards that keep this vision at AI’s core. He also serves on the AI Alliance Steering Committee, co-leads the Foundation Models, Data & Agents focus area, guides strategy for the Community Core Team, and helped launch the Open Trusted Data Initiative, giving enterprises a clear path to comply with the EU AI Act and related regulations.
At ServiceNow, Sean directs the Open-Science Ecosystem, forging collaborations that turn research into production. He co-founded BigCode, a 1,200-member research community across 60 countries whose open-access StarCoder models power Now Assist—delivering a documented 50% boost in developer productivity.
Sean also represents ServiceNow in ECMA TC-56, co-authoring NLIP (Natural Language Interaction Protocol), the forthcoming “HTTP for AI agents” standard that will let autonomous multi-agent systems connect, coordinate, and complete knowledge work safely across human and digital boundaries. Earlier, he grew HPE’s cloud AI-as-a-Service platform to 20,000 developers and set ecosystem strategy for Intel’s US $3.5 billion AI portfolio.
Throughout his career, Sean has pursued one goal: scale the benefits of AI for everyone, advancing open research, strong safety guardrails, and inclusive programs that let businesses, governments, and communities innovate responsibly and with confidence.
